The game started with both teams at high tempo. Old House’s first opportunity came after about five minutes. A corner swung in well found new signing Scott ready for his first goal for the club, but he couldn’t control the direction and it went wide of the goal. The end-to-end football continued to flow. Both teams playing well and creating chances, but a combination of good goal-keeping and excellent defending from both sides kept any attacks at bay. Old House’s best chance of the half came after 20 minutes and fell to top goal-scorer Martin Butler. He hit a superb shot which the Northfield keeper athletically managed to get his fingertips to, to push it onto the corner of the post. The second half started as the first had finished. It was Northfield who had the early chance in this half. A long punt out from their keeper caught Old House unaware and Northfield were one-on-one in front of the goal. Old House’s keeper, Chris, managed to get a finger to it which gave Tesfa enough time to get back and clear the ball to safety. At this point both teams started to realise that 3 points would only be won or lost with an outstanding piece of play or immensely bad luck! Butler again showed his skills and blistering pace when he ran the ball, alone, out of his own half with four Northfield players around him. He managed to hold them off until the last minute when, just before shooting, the ball was stolen off the end of his boot and cleared. Chances came and chances went, but what should have probably been the match winner fell to Scott. A well worked ball in from the corner flag into Scott’s feet and he managed to put it wide from only inches out! Both teams continued to push but couldn’t break the deadlock. Both deserved 3 points, but had to settle for one a piece. An outstanding game of football from both sides and a real showpiece for Sunday league football. Who said 0 – 0 draws are boring?
